ESP

During the 1970s, a Tokyo company emerged by the name of Electric Sound Products (ESP) that supplied aftermarket replacement parts for guitars. But it wasn’t until the mid-1980s when it made its way to New York City and opened a store, first on 19th Street and then on 48th Street, that it made its mark on U.S. soil. It also made custom guitars there for Kiss guitarist Vinnie Vincent and Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones. I remember the store on 48th Street well; I used to go down and buy blank necks when I was building guitars in the ’80s. It was a fantastic store, and it was a great loss to the NYC guitar community when it closed. It had all sorts of prefinished bodies with outrageous graphics and a cornucopia of guitar parts and accessories. During this same time it became the OEM supplier to such popular guitar companies as Kramer, Robin, and Schecter. But then as fate would have it, Dokken guitar shredder George Lynch visited the ESP store in Japan and the Kamikaze model was born. Again, like other manufacturers of the time it aligned itself with the top guitarists like James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica plus Dave Mustaine from Megadeth. In the ’90s, the company came out with the LTD brand, which were made in Korea and composed of lower end components, which made them more affordable to the consumer. Hence, they became extremely popular among thrash metal guitarists and metal heads around the world.
